7 Habits for Longer Life

This weekend I was reading an article in Parade Magazine written by Dr. Mark Liponis where in recent studies that women and men born in 1950 have a life expectancy at roughly 80 for women and 75 for men.

Dr. Liponis stated that most experts agree that increases in lifespan are due to better nutrition, health care, and decease prevention and treatment. But Dr. Liponis also states that there are 7 habits that will assist in a longer life.

Here are those 7 habits as I see them relate to a cruise vacation:

1. Rest Up. Getting no more than 8 and no less than 5 hours of sleep per day. When on a cruise, you will find that you have so much to do that when you reach your cabin, you will fall asleep fast. Waking up refreshed in the morning to beginning your new day.

2. Eat Right. Most of us when we have to manage our busy days, either skip meals or take in a quick fast food at our local drive through. Our bodies do not know what to do with this kind of stress that we put them through so they end up adding padding around the thighs and the middle. Eating healthy on a cruise vacation has been made easy for you with balanced meals through out the day. So take time to enjoy the meals on board, you will need them for all the activities throughout the day.

3. Make Friends. A cruise vacation is the best way to meet new friends. Each day activities are designed to help you achieve this habit. From singles mixing with singles, to the hairy chest contest, to the sing along at the piano bar, each activity posted in the daily activity newsletter is designed for you to take advantage of all the activities to make new friends. And if that is not enough, invite your friends to come on a cruise as well.

4. Use it, don't lose it. Your mind and body will wither unless you use them, so you need to exercise them both. Check out the spa and fitness centers that are available on all cruise ships. Each cruise ship have free (yes, there are still things that are free) class to help you achieve your best body. Check out the casino for the fast action card games, or the "Las Vegas" style show, or how about a trivia to connect with your new friends, or just a plain relaxing game of bridge on deck and read a book checked out from the ships library. There is so much to choose from when you cruise. Many ships even include educational classes for your enjoyment.

5. Mind your middle. "Maintaining a healthy weight and trim waistline may be the key to longevity." So take advantage of all the healthy food on board and the spa and fitness center on each and every cruise ship. Remember balance and excertise is the key to good health and fitness.

6. Get fresh air. This cannot be said enough. Did you know that each ship has a walking path so that you can put in your mile walk and enjoy the fresh air in the morning. And why not get out an take in a shore excursion like check out the tulips in the Spring time, or swim with the dolphins, or ride the zip line. You cannot get any more fresh air than that.

7. Make it a family thing. I heard it said this morning that money is not everything, with everything else is gone, friends and family is what you have left. Make your cruise vacation a family and friends affair. Special pricing and additional perks on each of the cruise lines make it easy to bring them along.
